SOG Paratool brings 14 tools to your pocket

When you think about multi-tools, the word “Leatherman” most likely comes to mind.  After all, it’s sort of like the word “Kleenex” is to tissue , or “Velcro” is to hook and loop (who knew the other brands were called hook and loop tape?).  But there are many brands of multi-tools and recently I had the opportunity to try out the SOG Paratool.  SOG was founded in 1986 by Spencer Frazer.  He set out to create a commemorative knife to honor a Special Ops Unit from the Vietnam conflict.  Since then the brand has become known as the Navy SEAL knife of choice.

So are all multi-tools created equally?  I can answer that question with a definitive NO.  I’ve been given “promotional” multi-tools over the years that fall apart within a few days of use.  I’ve also purchased inexpensive multi-tools and I find, like in most things, you generally get what you pay for.

SOG Paratool Key Features:

In my opinion the SOG Paratool is a solid multi-tool to carry on a daily basis.  You probably won’t kill a bear with it, but it will get the job done in most situations.  According to SOG, “The Paratool is the only multi-tool with a multiple angled plier head capability”.  But what does that mean to you?  It means that the way the tool opens allows you to operate the pliers in a variety of angles.  Basically it gets into tight spots and can be more comfortable in awkward positions.  When folded up the head of the pliers fits snuggly in between the handles.  Press the tab attached to the head open to an angle or all the way.

I will admit that when I first got this tool, it took a little getting used to how it opened and closed, but now I really like it.  And the tool is very comfortable to use.  The handles are smooth and feature ventilation holes, which is a classic SOG feature.

This particular multi-tool has 14 different features.  Of course, we already discussed the angled pliers.  If you look closely you’ll notice a wire cutter, and a bolt gripper in the jaws of the pliers.  So there are 3 of the 14 features.

Bolt Gripper and Wire Cutter are in the jaws of the pliers.

In one handle, there is bottle opener, which doubles as a medium flat screwdriver.  There are two blades, a serrated blade and a straight blade.  There is a Phillips head screwdriver and a large flat screwdriver.  If I’m counting right, we’re at 9.

In the other handle, there is an awl, and a can opener that doubles as a small flat screwdriver, and a three-sided file.  We are now at 13.   Each of the tools that folds out of the handle is locked into place when fully extended.  That feels better to me and it’s also safer.

On each handle, there is a ruler… and that makes 14!  In my opinion SOG selected appropriate tools for an everyday carry multi-tool, and they packed them all in a convenient pouch with a belt clip.

Made in the USA / Lifetime Warranty

Made in the USA, the Paratool is lightweight at 6 oz.  It’s made from 100% stainless steel, and is backed with a lifetime warranty.  The only downside to the Paratool is the price.  SOG lists it at a little over $93 on their website (at time of this post), but you can find it substantially cheaper on Amazon and other online retailers.
